Walking in Her Sandals: Finding Healing and New Beginnings with Mary Magdalene
Welcome to the porch, friend!
The sun is just beginning to peek through the trees, casting a warm glow across the garden. I’ve poured a fresh pitcher of iced tea, and the breeze is simply lovely today. Go ahead and settle into your favorite rocking chair, take a deep breath, and let’s spend a few quiet moments together.
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the women of the Bible. From a distance, they can seem like flawless figures frozen in time. But when you look closer—when you truly step into their sandals—you begin to see that they were women just like us. They carried heavy burdens, walked through deep valleys, and knew what it felt like to be broken.
Today, I want to share the story of a woman whose life speaks so tenderly to anyone longing for a fresh start: Mary Magdalene.
The Weight of the Past
For many years, Mary Magdalene’s story has been misunderstood, her reputation shaped by assumptions rather than truth. But the Gospel of Luke gives us a glimpse into her real beginning:
“…and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out…” — Luke 8:2
Can you imagine the weight she carried before she met Jesus? To be described as having seven demons suggests a life marked by deep torment, isolation, and brokenness. While we may not know the details of her daily struggles, we do understand what it feels like to be weighed down by things we cannot seem to escape.
I know what it’s like to live in the shadow of a painful past. Losing my daddy when I was just ten years old left a wound that lingered for decades. That grief turned into anxiety and pain I didn’t know how to process, and I found myself coping through alcohol and emotional eating. I felt trapped—bound by chains that seemed far too heavy to break on my own.
Maybe your burden looks different. Perhaps it’s a habit you can’t seem to overcome, a mistake you struggle to forgive, or the quiet exhaustion that comes from caring for someone you love.
Mary Magdalene knew what it felt like to be defined by her struggles. But then, she met Jesus.
From Healed to Whole
When Jesus cast those seven demons out of Mary, He didn’t simply offer temporary relief—He gave her a completely new identity. He took a woman who had been isolated and broken and welcomed her into a life filled with purpose, belonging, and love.
Mary didn’t respond with quiet gratitude alone. She followed Him. She supported His ministry. She remained faithful, even when others turned away.
While the world may have remembered her past, Jesus saw something entirely different. He saw a beloved daughter—strong, courageous, and made whole.
That same grace met me when I finally surrendered my pain to Him. He didn’t just help me overcome addiction or lose weight—He reached into the heart of that grieving ten-year-old girl and brought healing. He took my broken pieces and used them for His glory.
The First to See the Dawn
Because of her devotion, Mary Magdalene was given one of the most beautiful honors in all of Scripture.
On that quiet Sunday morning, while it was still dark, she went to the tomb. When she found it empty, she stood outside weeping. Through her tears, she saw a man she thought was the gardener. But everything changed when He spoke her name:
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). — John 20:16
He called her by name.
The very first person to witness the risen Savior—the first to be entrusted with the message of His resurrection—was a woman who had once been deeply broken.
What a beautiful reminder of God’s redemptive heart. He does not disqualify us because of our past. Instead, He often uses the very places where we were once wounded to reveal His greatest work.
Taking the First Step in Her Sandals
Friend, if you’re sitting here today feeling weighed down by your past, your worries, or the season you’re walking through, I want you to remember Mary Magdalene.
Your past does not define your future. Your struggles do not disqualify you from being used by God.
Here is my encouragement to you today: stop believing the lie that you are too broken, too tired, or too far gone for a new beginning. Everything feels scary before that first step—but healing begins when you surrender.
Let Jesus call you by name. Dust off your sandals. Step forward into the beautiful future He has prepared for you.
Let’s Pray Together
Dear Lord,
Thank You for being a God of restoration and new beginnings. Thank You for seeing beyond our brokenness and calling us by name, just as You did with Mary Magdalene. I lift up the woman reading this today who feels weighed down by her past or overwhelmed by her present. Pour Your peace over her. Break the chains that hold her back. Give her the courage to take that first step toward healing and hope.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
