New Beginnings: Building a Cottage Herb Garden in a Repurposed Space

The Front Porch Chat

Every corner of an urban homestead holds hidden potential. That worn-out patch of grass or old, unused corner is just waiting for a new beginning. Turning a forgotten, repurposed space into a romantic English cottage garden is one of the most rewarding projects you can take on—especially when the inspiration comes straight from family.

While we were recently visiting family in Ohio, my mom, Marie, absolutely fell in love with how my daughter Ashley had created her own stunning white “moon garden.” Mom was especially captivated by the beautiful white raised bed Ashley had built it in. Seeing how much joy it brought her, I hopped right onto Amazon and ordered a 8 x 4 foot white raised bed for our own yard to give Mom a beautiful view of her own.

Three Days of Hard Work

Giving an old space a fresh start takes real muscle and patience. My mom and I spent three full days out in the Florida sun transforming our chosen spot. Here is exactly how we built the foundation for our new repurposed bed:

Repurposing Your Space

Before you plant a single seed, you need to prepare the foundation. Here is how to give an old space a fresh start:

  • Clear the Spot: Remove any old weeds, rocks, or dead grass completely. We spent hours pulling weeds and digging up established plants to clear the area.
  • Define Boundaries: Use old bricks, stones, or reclaimed wood for edges. Building the Barrier:  I laid down a heavy-duty weed barrier, followed by a thick, protective layer of cardboard to choke out any stubborn grass
  • Assembling the Bed: We put together the new 8 x 4 foot white raised bed right on top of our prepared base.
  • Revitalize the Soil: Mix in plenty of rich, fresh organic compost.
  • Sandy’s Custom Soil Recipe: To give our cottage herbs and plants the absolute best start in life, I didn’t just throw regular dirt into the bed. I mixed up a rich, nutrient-dense “black gold” cocktail right inside the frame.
  • If you want to replicate our secret soil blend, here is exactly what we used:
    • Coconut Coir or Peat Moss: For excellent moisture retention in the summer heat.
    • Premium Garden Soil: To provide a stable, clean structural base.
    • Mushroom Compost: For a massive boost of natural organic matter.
    • Black Kow Manure: The ultimate slow-release fertilizer for hungry roots.
Once the bed was filled with this beautiful mixture, it was ready to welcome our favorite fragrant cottage classics like chives, thyme, basil, sturdy rosemary, and refreshing mint
  • Check the Light: Ensure the spot gets 6 to 8 hours of sun.

Sandy’s Favorite Cottage Herbs

When choosing plants for your repurposed plot, focus on texture, fragrance, and utility. These three classics thrive beautifully together:

  • English Lavender: Offers beautiful purple color and a deeply calming scent.
  • Cottage Rosemary: Provides sturdy, pine-like texture and excellent kitchen utility.
  • Garden Mint: Grows rapidly and provides a bright, refreshing flavor.

Sandy’s Tip: Mint spreads incredibly fast! Always plant mint in a buried pot or a separate container so it doesn’t take over your entire repurposed garden bed.

The Gardener’s Blessing

“To watch the corn grow, or the blossoms set; to draw hard breath over plough or spade; to read, to think, to love, to pray, are the things that make men happy.” — John Ruskin

May your hands be in the dirt today, your muscles be strong for the task, and your new beginnings bloom under His watchful care.
